It looks as though the mighty Blick Blick has finally net his match!

I guess it had to happen sooner or later.

Dang, Blick-Blick got punched in the throat. Karaoke night just won't sound the same.

Doug, are you on Upwork? I swear I'm looking at a comic you did from an MD.

I just looked at the name, lol. It IS you! I knew I recognized your style! At first, I was like damn this is good art... then, wait, isn't this Doug? The guy was talking about hiring me and showing me art from a previous comic for reference. Small world.

I did a comic for his daughter, and when I saw his name come up I applied for that job, but he wanted the comic to look more polished (less sketchy.) I told him that would take longer and I would need to be paid more. so I told him I would do the cover for him to see if it was what he wanted; he liked it and said he would pay me more for the extra time it would take to make a more polished comic.

long story short, yeah that was me.

I see. Yeah he hasn't hired me yet. Not sure if he will. But I did take a stab at redesigning the characters. Still weird knowing you drew them.

I never get my hopes up when applying for job at upworks. I get turned down a lot more than I get accepted. But,sometimes (like now) I get a bunch of work all at once. the bad thing about being a freelance artist starting out is the pay really sucks so I always bid at the max price they offer. But the main reason I do freelance work is mostly to get better at my craft, learn to deal with customers, and to see if this is something I would like to do for an actual living.

Well said. Also, relevant because I didn't get the job. He hired someone else. It's very unpredictable being a freelancer, but I figure that's why not very many people do it. I just know the alternative... working in an office... and I shudder to think about it (based on experience). But yea, you do have to get used to being turned down and client's being aloof. I only suggest bidding low to start just to get your rating up then bidding higher. Looks like you've got it covered though.

under bidding may be a good way to get jobs, but for me it didn't seem to matter. the first job I got at upworks I bid the max amount and got the job. Later on I started getting discouraged because I wasn't finding work so I started under bidding and I seemed to fair about the same. I think if they like your portfolio they will pay the max amount, but that's just my two cents. And, unless it says the job is only for people in america you will never be able to under bid people from other countries, such as India.
TheSmilingPsycho 29th Dec 2018, 7:52 AM edit delete reply
Very true. I like getting jobs from people in CA. They pay higher. Depending on how much I want the job I may lower my bid. Mostly I just apply apply apply.
